Hike to Choquequirao

4 days / 3 nights

Choquequirao (3033 m) was an important site for the Incas and a link between the coast and the province of Convecion. For more than 40 years it served the Incas as a refuge from the Spaniards. Choquequirao is located near the sacred mountain Salkantay (6271 m) and the gorge of the Apurimac river. Spectacular mountain landscapes, as well as typical flora and fauna of the Andes. Highest point: 3033 m. 


Day 1: from Cusco to Cachora, Playa Rosalina

• 04:00 h hotel pickup.

• Approximately 4 hour bus ride to Cachora.

• While the group is having breakfast, the horses with the luggage are getting ready for the hike.

• Today we hike 22 km, first on the plain to Capuliyoj and later down to Playa Rosalina on the banks of the Rio Apurimac, the main tributary of the Amazon.

• Camp at 1555 m. 

Day 2: from Playa Rosalina to Choquequirao

• After an early breakfast we walk uphill, first through opuntia plantations, later through cloud forest.

• Around 15:00 h arrival in Choquequirao and visit of the ruins.

• The view of the canyon is very impressive and we can see Andean condors circling over the mountains.

• Camp at Choquequirao, 3033 m. 

Day 3: from Choquequirao to Playa Rosalina

• After breakfast another opportunity to visit the remains of Choquequirao.

• Return to Santa Rosa.

• Lunch.

• Continue to Playa Rosalina. Here you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the waters of the Apurimac.

• Camp.

Day 4: from Playa Rosalina to Cachora, return to Cusco

• After an early breakfast it's back uphill, back to Chiquisca and on to Cachora.

• Return to Cusco.  

 

Hike to Choquequirao and Machu Picchu

8 days / 7 nights

Choquequirao and Machu Picchu have a lot in common. On this trek you will visit these two important sites of the Incas and experience breathtaking landscapes. Challenging but very rewarding. Highest point: 4668 m. 


Day 1: from Cusco to Cachora, Playa Rosalina

• 04:00 h hotel pickup.

• Approximately 4 hour bus ride to Cachora.

• While the group is having breakfast, the horses with the luggage are getting ready for the hike.

• Today we hike 22 km, first on the plain to Capuliyoj and later down to Playa Rosalina on the banks of the Rio Apurimac, the main tributary of the Amazon.

Day 2: from Playa Rosalina to Choquequirao

• Approximately 15:00 h arrival in Choquequirao and visit of the ruins.

• The view of the canyon is very impressive and we can see Andean condors circling over the mountains.

• Camp at Choquequirao, 3033 m. 

ChoquequiraoDay 3: from Choquequirao to Maizal

• Today we first climb up to 3299 m and then descend to the Rio Blanco at 1909 m.

• On the way we pass the Pinchiunuyoj ruins with Inca terraces.

• We can observe the gradual change of vegetation and the appearance of different species of orchids and birds.

• From the Rio Blanco we climb about 3 hours up to Maizal.

• Camp at 3000 m.

Day 4: from Maizal to Yanama

• Continue uphill from Maizal.

• We pass the «Victoria mine», which was already used by the Incas.

• Shortly before the pass at 4154 m we walk on original paved Inca paths, then it goes downhill.

• Camp at 3800 m.  

Day 5: from Yanama to Totora

• After breakfast, it's slowly uphill to the second and highest pass at 4668 m.

• The view of the snow-capped mountains, especially Sacsarayoj and Padreyoj, is spectacular.

• Camp at 3632 m.  

Machu PicchuDay 6: from Totora to Playa

• Today we go downhill to the Totora river.

• Along the way we can see many birds, especially hummingbirds, various species of woodpeckers, orchids and begonias.

• Camp at 2125 m.

Day 7: from Playa to Aguas Calientess

• Today we climb for the last time up to 2810 m, for which we need about 3 hours. From there we already have a beautiful view of Machu Picchu.

• After a good break we continue to the hydroelectric power station on the Urubamba river. From here we can continue walking to Aguas Calientes or take the train at 16 h.

Machu Picchu• Overnight in hotel in Aguas Calientes.  

Day 8: Machu Picchu, Cusco

• After an early breakfast we take the bus up to Machu Picchu, where we are guided through the ruins for about 2 hours.

• Afterwards we have free time to explore on our own.

• Return to Aguas Calientes.

• 16:00 h return by train to Cusco.
