Chaparrí
Chaparri, the first privately owned nature reserve in Peru, is part of
the town of Santa Catalina de Chongoyape, which has turned much of its
land into a nature reserve. The ecoregion is typical of the equatorial dry
forest, with carob trees, cacti and scrub. Red deer and foxes can be found
here, as well as endangered species such as the spectacled bear, the
white-winged guan (Penelope albipennis) and the Andean condor. The rescue
center for spectacled bears is unique. Animal and plant life can be
observed on several circular routes: Turkey Trail, Bear Trail and Huachuma
Trail or Cactus Trail.
