Regional travel in Peru – Travel program PTW-CBL003-en
This is the classic and most popular
trekking route of the Cordillera Blanca. 4 or 5 days on foot in one of the
most spectacular areas of the Cordillera Blanca, through gorges adorned
with turquoise lakes, quenual forests, high Andean meadows with the
special environment characterized by the ichu (type of grass) and always
surrounded by the towering and challenging peaks exceeding 6000 m in
height, crossing high passes, Punta Unión (4750 m) and Portachuelo de
Llanganuco (4765 m). This hike offers us contemplation of the most famous
peaks of the Cordillera Blanca.
This route gradually climbs clockwise, so that we
reach the highest points well acclimatized.
The tour begins in the Santa Cuz valley. In a slow
ascent we come to the Punta Unión pass (4750 m) to then descend to
Vaqueria through the Huaripampa gorge. From here, depending on the
program, continue on foot or by car to Portachuelo de Llanganuco (4765 m)
and then descend through the Llanganuco valley. We visit the Llanganuco
lakes, Chinancocha and Orkoncocha, then return to Huaraz.

days
From Huaraz we go down the
Callejón de Huaylas north for about 1 hour to the town of Caraz (2300 m).
Here it is about 2 hours on a paved dirt road up into the Cordillera
Blanca to the small town of Cashapampa (2900 m). Our trekking team, guide,
cook, driver and everything else is waiting for us to start the trek once
the pack animals are loaded. The first part of the tour takes us through
the Santa Cruz valley to our first camp at Llamacorral (3650 m), 4 h.
The trail continues through the
wide Santa Cruz valley, past lakes Ichiccocha and Jatuncocha to Quisuar.
Here we branch off to go through the Arhuaycocha gorge to Alpamayo base
camp, from where we have magnificent views of Quitaraju (6040 m), Alpamayo
(5947 m), Artezonraju (6025 m) and other mountains. Then we continue the
trail to the next camp at Taullipampa (4000 m) at the foot of the
impressive Taulliraju (5830 m).
This is a long and arduous day.
About 3 hours a winding path leads us uphill on a slope between the mighty
Taulliraju and the turquoise lake Taullicocha to the pass Punta Unión
(4750 m). From here we have a magnificent view of Chacraraju (6112 m),
Artezonraju (6025 m), Pirámide (5885 m), Huandoy (6395 m), Alpamayo (5940
m), Santa Cruz (6259 m), Rinrihirca (5810 m ) and Taulliraju (5830 m). On
the eastern slope of the Cordillera Blanca we descend to the lakes of
Morococha, to the wide and long Huaripampa valley. Traversing quenual
forests and lovely Andean meadows we approach the camp at Huaripampa (3600
m).
We continue downhill for about 1
hour to the small Andean village of Colcabamba (3350 m) before then
ascending to Vaquería (3700 m) for 2 hours. Here a vehicle awaits us to
take us further up to Portachuelo de Llanganuco (4765 m). Here we have a
magnificent view of the north and south peaks of Huascaran (6768 m and
6650 m respectively), Chopicalqui (6354 m), Huandoy (6395 m) and Pisco
(5752 m). We then trek down the Llanganuco valley to visit the Llanganuco

Combination of the classic hike from the Santa Cruz valley to Llanganuco with a fascinating climb to the snow-capped Pisco (5872 m), the «Viewpoint of the Cordillera Blanca», which rewards us with a fantastic 360° panoramic view. The ascent is technically easy, can be completed in a day from base camp, and requires minimal mountaineering equipment.
As Program 1 until arrival in Llanganuco. Then on to the campsite at Cebollapampa near the Llanganuco lakes.
Climb up to base camp (4400 m) and rest to be in best shape for the following day.
Before sunrise we make our way to the summit. First we cross a moraine coming down from Hundoy to the edge of the glacier (4900 m), 3 hours. With the necessary safety measures, we continue uphill on the glacier with a slight incline to the pass between the east summit of Huandoy and Pisco (1½ hours). Then it's 3 hours steeper, but without major technical difficulties, further uphill to the summit (5872 m), which gives us a fantastic panoramic view. Descend the same way to the base camp (5 hours).
Hike to Cebollapampa (3 h) and from there drive to Huaraz (2½ h).
