The delicious flavor of Queso helado (frozen
cheese) has earned it second place among the 50 best frozen desserts on the
planet, according to the ranking prepared by Taste Atlas,
a
prestigious international culinary travel magazine. In the ranking list
prepared by Taste Atlas, it surpasses the best ice creams in Italy and the
United States that also make up the ranking.
Queso helado is the most emblematic typical dessert and source of pride in Arequipa, and although it does not contain cheese, but milk, it is called that because of the similarity that the pieces of frozen milk adopt with fresh white cheese. Its ingredients are condensed milk, coconut milk, vanilla, grated coconut and sprinkled ground cinnamon as decoration.
The genesis of this traditional delicacy from Arequipa dates back to the convent of Santa Catalina. The nuns who there treasured a vast amount of culinary techniques and knowledge, preparing the first recipes for different stews, including Queso helado.
Currently, Queso helado is tasted in many restaurants, picanterias, cafeterias and gastronomic fairs in Arequipa, as well as being sold on the surroundings of the Plaza de Armas.
