The
Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, the largest protected area in Peru with
countless rivers and lakes between the rivers Marañón and Ucayali, is home
to a large number of different bird species.
• Reception at Iquitos airport or hotel
pick-up in Iquitos.
• Drive along thel road from Iquitos to Nauta,
the first city founded by the Spaniards on the banks of the Marañon. The
journey on the 97 km long paved road takes about 1½ hours.
• At Nauta, board a boat to first visit the
confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers. Afterwards drive to the
lodge.
• Arrival at the lodge.
• Lunch.
• Bird watching in the area surrounding the
lodge: sightings include paradise tanager, hooded tanager, opal-crowned
tanager, masked crimson tanager, purple-throated cotinga, various species
of parrots and macaws.
• Dinner and conversation about the course of
the next few days.
• Overnight at the Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge.
• Exploring the Pacaya-Samiria National
Reserve by boat in rivers and lakes hidden by vegetation and on foot along
narrow trails in the middle of the jungle. Entrance to the protected area
on the Yanayacu river, an area open to tourism with an exceptional wealth
of birds (only here about 400 species of birds), animal and plant life.
• If desired, night walks can be undertaken to
look for owls and other nocturnal birds, as well as black caimans.
• Visit to the community of Yarina to learn
about the daily activities of the original inhabitants of the National
Reserve. You can contribute to the development of the community by
purchasing typical handicrafts made from seeds and tagua, known as
vegetarian ivory.
• Some of the birds that can be observed:
amazon kingfisher, ringed kingfisher, green-and-rufous kingfisher,
american pygmy kingfisher, tanager finch, chestnut-eared aracari,
red-cockaded woodpecker, spangled cotinga, lemon-throated barbet,
white-eared jacamar, black-capped donacobius, horned screamer,
black-collared hawk, jabiru, wood stork, roseate spoonbill, pied plover,
black-tailed antbird, black-necked red-cotinga, grey-cheeked nunlet,
lettered aracari, ivory-billed aracari, stripe-breasted woodpecker,
rufous-capped antthrush, tropical gnatcatcher, yellow-billed jacamar ...
• Gray and pink dolphins, turtles, various
monkeys and sloths can also be observed.
• Overnight in tents on a riverbank or in a
clearing in the forest. Cold lunch at the current location.
• Day 4 return to the lodge, dinner and
overnight at the lodge.
• After breakfast
boat trip to Nauta.
• Drive to
Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve, 27 km from Iquitos.
• Exploring the reserve
on both days. The birds found here are quite different from those found in
Pacaya-Samiria and some of them are quite new to science, e.g. ancient
antwren, mishana tyrannulet, Allpahuayo antbird, grey-legged tinamou
(November to March), rufous potoo, cinnamon-crested spadebill, pompadour
cotinga.
• Cold lunch during the
excursion on both days.
• After dinner, overnight
stay at the «IIAP Investigation Center» of the Allpahuayo-Mishana National
Reserve.
• Breakfast.
• Drive to Iquitos.
• Typical lunch in a
restaurant. (If lunch is not desired, there is no discount or refund.)
• Transfer to the airport
for the flight to Lima.
